The term 'race' began to categorize people early in the 16th century. by the 18th century it had evolved into meaning a type, sort or kind. when the English started their colonies, they saw their race, the white race, as free, and the people they had conquered were their slaves. the differences that the English saw in other races is what ultimately caused racial categories.
